Inside the LED Filament: How the Vintage Look Went Solid-State
A technical breakdown of LED filament construction — sapphire substrate, phosphor coating, series-chip design and why quality varies so dramatically between suppliers.
A modern LED filament is a thin rod of sapphire, glass or metal alloy carrying a series of dozens — sometimes hundreds — of tiny LED chips wired in series. The rod is coated in a yellow phosphor that converts the blue LED emission into the warm white spectrum consumers expect.
Because the entire rod glows uniformly, the visual effect is astonishingly close to the original tungsten filament. Because the chips run at low current, the rod produces very little waste heat — one of the historic problems that made packaging LED technology into a bulb envelope difficult.
Bulb quality is dominated by three factors: the phosphor formulation (which determines both colour temperature and CRI), the driver circuitry inside the base (which determines flicker performance and dimming compatibility), and the thermal path from filament to base (which determines lifetime).
A cheap LED filament bulb typically fails at the driver, not the LEDs themselves. Our factory uses isolated switching-mode drivers rated for the full 15,000-hour rated life of the bulb, tested by full-lot aging cycles before shipment.
